"I wish to be a
firefighter!"
Wish kid Tommy is an 11-year-old boy from Temple with static encephalopathy, an illness described as permanent or unchanging
brain damage. This illness has left him non-verbal, but because of his love of the color red, fire trucks and the bright flashing
lights, he was able to convey his most heartfelt wish to Make-A-Wish® Volunteer Wish Granters – to be a firefighter!
The Make-A-Wish Foundation teamed up with the Austin Fire Department to make Tommy’s wish a reality! Tommy had a two day wish
experience, complete with a tour of the Fire Museum at Central Station, a presentation of his badge and uniform, a shopping spree
at the Station Store, a tour of the Capitol and a fire boat ride back to his hotel. The next day, he got to participate in two
fire demonstrations, had lunch at City Hall and was presented as an “honorary fireman” at City Hall by Councilman Mike Martinez.
His wish experience ended with a limo ride home to Temple.
"His eyes lit up when he got to shoot water on the house at the airport," said Wish Granter Kathryn. "You could tell
in his eyes and in his smile that this was one of the best days of his life."
